How to personalize the content (from others) that you share

by | Dec 15, 2017 | Growth Hacks | 0 comments

In my previous article, I talked about how to nurture your audience with other’s people content… the right way.

I explained why curating content is an easy and inexpensive way to keep your audience engaged. By curating content the right way you can be able to get new subscribers and retarget your followers, via custom audience ads, in social media.

  1. Find content related to your offerings that have already traction. To do that use tools such as Buzzsumo and Epicbeat.
  2. Write a compelling summary of the article.
  3. Create a retargeting link to that content using PixelMe.
  4. Create a link from the previous one that allows embedding your CTA using Poplink.

In this article, I want to expand on something I haven’t seen anyone do. What about personalizing the content (from others) that you are sharing?

The first two steps are similar to what I mentioned in my last article. If you haven’t read it yet, you may find it useful.

Look for good articles in your niche

Since you want to increase the engagement with your audience, you will want to find good content that you think would be appreciated by your readers or subscribers. Again, as I said before, you should use tools such as Buzzsumo and/or Epicbeat to find content that resonates well and it’s been shared by the community at large.

Curate the content

This step means to create a compelling summary of the article to entice your lectors to read the article. That’s it.

Personalize the article, but do not rewrite it.
Wait, what?

Since you are curating, you are not going to rewrite the article. Nor you are going to plagiarize it. That would be bad.

You are going to share the article as it is, except that you are going to use a tool that will allow for some cool personalization. The idea is that you want to grab the attention of the reader.

I hear you thinking….Gilbert must be on drugs or something.

How on hell he is planning to personalize articles made by other people without copying and editing them?

Well, let me tell you what you can do. Target all your visitors – even anonymous ones – with a page that meets their needs and expectations.

Using tools such as unless, you can modify a web page, any web page, and create a tailored experience based on certain attributes.

Disclaimer: unless was designed to be used with your web pages to be able to make them dynamic for your own users. However, what I am proposing here is a hack to increase the engagement on the articles you share.

How it works

Chose an article. I covered that already.

Create audience segments, choosing from 20+ targeting conditions. For example, a time range: from 11 am to 2 pm is lunchtime. Or the current weather where the user is at the time. Or if she is a returning visitor to the page, or if the visitor comes from a specific location, etc.

Create multiple page variations, one for each audience.
Them, when published, a version of the page will be shown to a reader depending on the segment she is in, according to your criteria.

But here is the thing. I don’t suggest to change the article per se. That’s not the point. However, you can add CTAs (Call to Actions) so people will go from the article to your site, to subscribe to your Messenger bot, etc. Or just to surprise them and make them more curious and engaged with the original content. Hey, after all, you want them to read that article, don’t you.

So, let’s look at an example.
I chose this article for no particular reason. Just kidding. It’s a good article!

I created 3 segments:

  • One for people reading it at lunchtime – from 11 AM to 2 PM
  • One for dinnertime – from 5:30 M to 7:30 PM
  • And the last one for people reading it after hours (if that you… get to sleep) – from 9:30 PM to 5 AM

In everyone, I changed a few things.
I also made some edits to the default page.

Then, unless provides me with a link (only one) that I can share. Depending on the conditions, a different version will be shown to each person.

In this case, the link is

If you want to see that article with your own name on it go there from Facebook Messenger by clicking here

However, if you read my previous article, I can do better than sharing that link directly.

I will create a retargeting link with PixelMe, so I can retarget people that visit this page on Facebook, Google, LinkedIn, etc. if I want to.

So, my retargeting link is As expected it looks exactly as the previous one.

Now depending the time of the day (wherever you are), you will see a different version of the page.
The default will look like

Note that I have changed the CTA on the top right. I also passed a URL parameter for FIRSTNAME=’name’, so people that I sent for my email marketing tool (i.e. Mailchimp), will see their name in the post.

The dinnertime will look like:

I will leave you the other two as surprises. So visited this link at lunchtime and after hours to see the results.

Besides this kind of hack, unless is very useful to tailor your own pages. You can see some examples on their site.

Unless starts at $9/month, but most people will need the pro account, which runs at $99/month.
The good news is that you can get a pro account for a one-time payment of $49 (for the next few days at least) using this link.

Also, you can get Briefcase, which includes unless, EpicBeat, PopLink, Pixel Me Pro and other 35+ applications for sales, marketing, data analytics, SEO, content, ecommerce, and finance. All for just $49/month. Just amazing if you ask me:)

By the way, Briefcase offers a trial for the whole thing. Crazy, isn’t it?

Have you done something similar? Please comment.
